When Did Liverpool Put Torres In Charge?

by Patton Hunnicutt on January 19, 2010

Fernando Torres. Super hero. El NiñoFernando opened his mouth and inserted his foot…

Fernando Torres, who is out 6 weeks with an injury, is calling on the brass in Liverpool to sign either David Silva or David Villa.  Now, from a purely emotional perspective I can understand this call for a signing.  Who wouldn’t want to play with his countrymen who also play with you on your national club?  I can understand the desire to get more familiar faces around, but why would Torres make this call public?

Valencia is on a tear right now and they are inching ever closer to the top of the Spanish Premier Division.  Why would Villa or Silva want to come out to a floundering Liverpool club and ruin the chances that Valencia has of really making a statement this season?

It’s one thing is Torres wants to contact Villa or Silva privately and say, “Yo, you’ve GOT to come to Liverpool.  I’m dying out here and we need stars, like right now?”  However, it is something altogether different if you’re going to call for signings of players who play for a good team in another country “out of the blue”.

Now, who knows, maybe he did talk to these guys, but what if he didn’t?  Is he going to be brought on charges by the FA for being stupid?  If we’re going to nail everybody for every little thing then it stands to reason that the boys up at the FA would want to have a word with our boy Fernando.

You know what’s funny?  This is what he said in the Daily Mail:

“If I could, I would take David Villa or David Silva to Liverpool as a partner in attack. I wish they could come. It would be a great asset for our team.”

I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I don’t think he talked to these guys.  Plus, he clearly isn’t talking to the Liverpool front office, or if he is he’s talking to them like they don’t know what they’re doing.  (I know, I’ve said they’re stupid) but regardless of whether I like them or not a PLAYER can’t go to the front office and try to run the team.  Period.

Torres needs to shut up his mouth and rehab his injury.  No amount of talking is going to make this team better, and it only brings distraction.  Now every player on the team has to answer questions about Silva or Villa coming in.  Plus, the guys who would be replaced by Silva or Villa have lost all respect for Torres.  If Torres did anything he made this team worse.

If any signings are made then this team is sunk.  I can’t imagine having to play with Torres after he selfishly ran his mouth and basically telling the whole world that I suck and he’s “God’s gift”.  Sorry Liverpool, but this looks really bad.
