The Pick: Another defender named Santos from Brazil in my Top 100? Yep! I profiled Nilton a couple of weeks ago, but now I must turn my attention to Djalma, or as I like to call him “Tenacious D.” Now, Tenacious D and Nilton both played in four World Cups and won two, but Djalma was a starter on all four Cup teams while Nilton started only on the two that hoisted the Cup. His game-winning assist at the 1962 World Cup is regarded as one of the best plays ever.

The Flick: Tenacious D played almost 100 matches for Brazil, a huge number of appearances for such a juggernaut squad. Thus, I would love to pick an actor with a long, storied career to play him. But, Djalma’s look is a hard one to match up to any current Hollywood stars. So, I will have one man whose name begins with ”Dj” play him in my bio-film. I would end up making an offer to Djimon Hounsou to play him. The man can act, and he’s got the physical skills.

The Limerick: Djalma deserves a much better poem than this, but c’est la vie:

Back in the day, Brazil had two defenders who went by the same name,

Both Nilton and Djalma Santos would forever change the beautiful game,

Although they played in the back,

They were dangerous on the attack,

So when you see CBs push toward the net you now know who to blame.
