Stand By Your Man

There is a terrible illness that is spreading all over the world and it is not the swine flu.  The disease is called the Grass is Always Greener.  Fans, players, writers, and club officials all suffer from the terrible plague.  Pretty soon it will obliterate every solid coach on the market not named Fergie.

And their is no real vaccination for the terrible illness.  In fact the usual antidote used to cure the disease is to sack one manager and replace him with a guy further removed from the squad then the previous.  Rafael Benitez of Liverpool is the next name that comes up on the list for the unfortunate plague.

Rafa has been with the Reds since 2004 and every year the coach has been with the squad they have finished no worse then fifth place on the league board.  In fact last year the squad finished second place and contended for the Premier League title for most of the season.  But a year ago is like ten years in competitive sports and second place is second place to many angry fans.  Now that the club has a “supposed” rift developing in their locker room and it seems like these are the types of things that cause a disease to only get worse rather then hit a point of remission.

And what should Rafa do?  His squad handed over one of their most underrated players right before the season began.  Their star striker has battled injuries and missed some starts and their squad didn’t live up to their Champions League billing.  But are they not in fifth place currently?  And four out of five of their upcoming Premier League matches are against very winnable opponents (Blackburn, Wolves, Wigan, Portsmouth).

I know it has been said several times before, but this is when Liverpool turns it all around.  A top four finish is on the horizon and a deathly disease will vanish from Anfield.
