Rooney Brings ManU 1-Up on Chelsea

by Patton Hunnicutt on February 7, 2010

Wayne RooneyYes, it’s true that Wayne Rooney scored a thousand goals against Pompey to bring ManU 1-up on the Premier League table over Chelsea, but we’re all forgetting that Chelsea plays on Sunday…against Arsenal.

Now, it could be very easy for us to say that ManU is on fire.  Carlo Ancelotti even said that he thinks Wayne Rooney is the best player in the world right now.  Ok.  However, Chelsea still fields John Terry and Didier Drogba.  They haven’t been overtaken in an overwhelming fashion, but United has made the race much tighter.

When Chelsea was really hot everyone was all in a tizzy about whether they could get to 90 points…since no one has ever NOT won the final after accruing 90 points.  Well, the 90-point-talk needs to go and Chelsea needs to just stay in front.

They get Arsenal today and with that match they can do a few things:

1.  Prove that they have overcome the John Terry distraction

2.  Pull 2 points clear of ManU for the time being

3.  Keep Arsenal at a distance from themselves AND United

and

4.  Make certain that Tottenham, Man City, Liverpool, and Aston Villa KNOW they are playing for 3rd…maybe.

What else can Chelsea do with a win?  Put Arsenal in their place.  Arsenal has been coming on strong and Chelsea needs to show Arsenal that they are NOT in contention.  If Arsenal stays 6 points back after this weekend then they may not be able to catch up.

True, Wayne Rooney may be the best in the world, but being the best doe snot always equal sustained success.  Soccer is not a 1-man sport.  Soccer is a team sport that requires multiple people to lift up a superstar.  ManU has that right now and Chelsea needs to answer.

I love the dogfight at the top.  I hope we get the rest of the season in “dogfight mode”.
