The Premier League has asked Wolves boss Mick McCarthy to explain his controversial team selection at Manchester United on Tuesday night.
McCarthy made 10 changes to the side that defeated Tottenham on Saturday and then watched his team lose 3-0. The Wolves fans who had made the trip were not happy that McCarthy in essence put out a reserve side Tuesday night and now the Premier League wants to know why he picked that lineup.
A statement issued by the Premier League today said:
“The Premier League Board have written to Wolverhampton Wanderers to request their observations in relation to the team fielded in their League fixture against Manchester United. Once the observations are received the Board will decide whether any further action is warranted.”
After the game on Tuesday, when asked about this team selection McCarthy said:
“The injuries tipped the balance. I don’t have a policy and I am not worried about repercussions from the Premier League. I said I would play my best team and that was the fittest, strongest team I could pick.”
While technically the Premier League can deduct points from Wolves, nothing is going to happen here. With a huge game against Burnley this weekend, McCarthy wanted to make sure he had a rested team, especially as games are coming thick and fast at the moment.
What McCarthy did is not unusual. Neil Warnock is still complaining about a team that Liverpool put out against Fulham several years ago and Manchester United’s team against Hull right before the Champions League Final last season was nothing more a Man United reserve team.
