PLTO Premier League Top Performers

John Terry

We never give too much attention to defenders in the weekly Top Performers, but last week John Terry not only led the Blues to a shutout against a highly potent offense, but he also put in the lone goal of the match and a timely first on the season for Terry.  Chelsea was one of only two teams last weekend that achieved the shutout and Terry anchoring the line is a critical part of that success.  The UEFA Champions League Defender of the Year looks to continue his 09 campaign with a five point lead over the rest of the Premier League squads and still in strong Champions League position as well.

Hull City

Playing against an underrated Stoke City squad, Hull City snapped their dreaded winless streak with a 2-1 victory.  The Tigers had only won 3 out of their last 30 matches making them the worst squad in the league over nearly a full season since their hot start a year back.   And they have former Stoke player Seyi Olofinjana and forward Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to thank for the victory.  The Tigers were trailing by a goal at half and then scored two goals to steal the win in the last thirty minutes.  Vennegoor of Hesselink’s goal came in the 90th minute with a one man advantage and the newly signed player earned his squad three much needed points even though he had just entered the competition.

Aston Villa

I know that Bolton is certainly not a powerhouse squad, but anytime you score five different goals and they all come from a different player then that means you are one of the league’s most potent offenses.  An impressive showing for the league’s fifth place squad.
