1) Wayne Rooney- Man U

Rooney will win the honor this year of being not only the best domestic player in the Premier League, but also the best overall player as well.  Rooney is shattering all of his past goal milestones this season and has really proven to be a potential 30 goal guy.  For a guy that has used as a secondary striker for most of his career at Man U this feat is very impressive.

2) Didier Drogba- Chelsea

Drogba would have been given the honor if the award was bestowed truly at the midway point of the year (the 19th match), but in the last month Rooney has not only overtaken Drogba’s goal scoring lead, but he has done it in unbelievable fashion.  Drogba will likely give the Englishman a run for his money, but his time away from the Premier League on international duty will likely cost him.

3) Frank Lampard- Chelsea

Lampard is the guy that controls the offense from the center of the pitch and gives Drogba and Anelka a great look at the net.  He doesn’t get all the glory that the strikers enjoy, but he is a team leader and an excellent passer and goal scorer from long range.

4) Jermaine Defoe- Tottenham

Defoe makes the list due to a few ridiculous matches, but his club is beginning to slip and losing Keane to Celtic shouldn’t help the clubs results either.  Defoe will likely finish the season in the top three in goals scored though.

5) Cesc Fabregas- Arsenal

Fabregas leads the league in assists and is right up there in goals too.  That makes him a candidate for the most total points on offense this year and his squad is also the most potent offense of the first half.  He doesn’t have too much help up top right now, but Fabregas is having a breakout year.
