Warning Premier League fans. This award may not be the most flattering honor to receive, but winning the award just might propel you into MVP statistics the following season. Just ask Chelsea star Didier Drogba who was bestowed the unfortunate honor last season during his injury-plagued campaign that saw teammate Anelka win the Golden Boot. In other words you actually have to be a great player in order to be considered for the honor of Most Disappointing Player.
And injuries is often the major theme to a season that is considered a bust. Just ask Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar about that. Van der Sar was the 2008/2009 keeper of the year according to the PLTO and heading into this season the Red Devils were going to need even better results for the aging Dutchmen. But injuries and personal matters have left van der Sar off of the pitch and recently it was reported that the UEFA Champions League Keeper of the Year might miss all of 2009/2010 now due to a brain hemmorage his wife suffered over the holidays.
The incident obviously is not van der Sar’s fault and all he can do is hope for the best as he takes some time away from the game, but the Red Devils will likely miss their star keeper during his absence and that may be the true reason why Man U will likely finish the year out of the top spot. Hopefully van der Sar will bounce back from the tough times and finish the year strong. But his absence from the pitch will not help his chances of avoiding winning this tough award.
