PLTO 2009 EPL Awards: Most Improved Player

by The Yank on July 3, 2009

The 2007/2008 season is one that Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka would love to forget.  The season would start out solid with Anelka scoring ten goals in his first eighteen games for the Bolton Wanderers, but when Anelka was transferred over to the Blues it seemed he had forgot to pack his lucky boots.  The French forward only scored one goal in ten Premier League matches for Chelsea.  Even worse he was considered the scapegoat of the club’s defeat to Man U in the Champions’ League Final.  Anelka’s penalty kick, the seventh and final, was blocked by Edwin van der Sar securing the victory for Man U.

Well thankfully for Anelka he would redeem his early frustrations with the Blues this season.  The star forward put up a league-high nineteen goals earning the Golden Boot Award for his effort.  Anelka was lethal all season around the goal frame.  The quick forward had two matches in which he scored three goals.  He also scored in the last four Premier League matches of the season.  Anelka’s final goal this year against Sunderland was among the best highlights of the season.  The highlight displays his unique combination of speed, vision, and a powerful leg.

Anelka’s most proud moment this year was likely the 4-1 defeat the Blues handed Arsenal.  Anelka scored against his former club and helped Arsenal suffer one of their worse home losses in nearly forty years.  Anelka’s hard work, his knack for being in the right position, and his ability to finish near the net were all reasons why he was among the best players in the Premier League this season.  With strong play Anelka has changed his negative image of the Incredible Sulk back into the Incredible Hulk.
