Fulham’s 2008/2009 season was not only a tremendous improvement from the previous year’s outcome, it would conclude as the best finish by the Cottagers in Premier League history. The club finished the year in seventh place and earned fourteen victories over the course of the season (six more then 2008’s record). The result was good enough for the Cottagers to contend for the UEFA Cup next season.
One key improvement the Cottagers made last off season was acquiring Australian keeper Mark Schwarzer. Schwarzer left his long time home of Middlesbrough following the 2007/2008 season and the keeper would be critical to the Cottagers success this season. The Aussie started in every match this year and finished the season among the league’s best between the posts only allowing thirty-four goals for the year. The result would be the fourth strongest on defense in the Premier League this season and the club would give up twenty-six fewer goals this season than the previous one.
Fulham improved ten spots on the board this year which is the most of any team. The Cottagers also earned seventeen more points this year then last year. The club’s offense did not improve much only scoring one more goal this year, but midfielder Clint Dempsey has earned some respect around the league as a team leader. The American was tied for the team lead in goals and was a key component down the stretch. Fulham also had one of their finest FA Cup performances. The club eventually lost their Quarter Final match to Man U. It would be among the best League Cup, FA Cup, and Premier League finishes for the club in league history.
