Michael Owen Fit Again

by David Wilson on March 11, 2009

michael-owenNewcastle caretaker boss Chris Hughton is hoping that a fit Michael Owen can help guide Newcastle to safety with the striker set to return for Saturday’s trip to Hull. Owen, 29, has missed five games with an ankle problem and during that time the Magpies have slipped to one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

“You want your big players around the squad and Michael is one of those,” Hughton said ”To have him available is a boost for us going into the Hull game. For numerous teams between now and the end of the season, the ability to score goals will be crucial to where they end up. Michael isn’t just one of the best strikers in the Premier League, he is one of the best strikers around anywhere. You have to look at his record. These have been tough times for Michael regarding injuries but the one thing that remains consistent is that, when he plays, he scores goals. That’s testimony to the type of player he is.”

Owen, who also had a groin operation during the last month, has scored 30 goals in 70 appearances for the club, with 10 of those coming this season. His last goal came in 2-2 home draw against West Ham on 10 January.

A fit Michael Owen for the last ten games could well be the difference between Newcastle staying up and getting relegated.
