Liverpool is in a Downward Spiral

by Patton Hunnicutt on November 25, 2009

Liverpool is out of the Champion’s League and their chief came out said that Rafa Benitez is not in jeopardy of being fired.  I’m never going to call for anyone’s job, but I’m not going to sit here and act like this makes any sense at all.  Christian Purslow gave a public vote of confidence to Rafa after the Reds crapped out of the Champion’s League in Group play.  Purslow is quoted as saying:

“You can never predict last-minute goals, which have cost us dear in the Champions League.”  “That’s no basis to make managerial decisions.

“We don’t run our business in that respect. I’m on the record as saying Rafa’s signed a new five-year contract, he’s four months into that contract so to discuss that is not appropriate. He is under no threat.”

Now, as nice as it is that they don’t just up and fire anybody for anything hasn’t this been going on longer than the ONE last minute goal that sunk them in the Champion’s League?  Hasn’t this been an issue for a while?  Wait a minute…

He’s on a new 5-year deal?  So, this problem doesn’t stop at the Manager does it?  Liverpool has organizational issues.  In fact, I would say it’s safe to say that Rafa Benitez is the Charlie Weis of the Premier League.  He was alright and then they threw all kinds of money at him and now they realize that he wasn’t who they thought he was.  Yeah, we’re seeing this one play out college football as we speak.

So, this Purslow cat needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror because he’s got just as many issues as Rafa.  This also partially explains Rafa’s blowup over Torres possibly being sold.  (I still don’t condone him complaining, but I can understand where it came from now if the front office of the Reds is as inept as I think they are.)

Fasten your seatbelts Liverpool fans…it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
