Gold Quits Birmingham City: Can You Blame Him?

by Patton Hunnicutt on October 10, 2009

It has been announced that since the takeover of Birmingham city by a Hong Kong businessman that David Gold was asked to take a role as Vice President of the club and the new owner, Carson Yeung, was going to bring in someone who heads one of his companies.  At that idea, Gold quit.

Can you blame him?  I’ve seen this a thousand times in American sports.  People with cash buy teams…that’s good.  People with cash buy teams and then put more of their own cash into them…that’s good.  People with cash buy teams and allow people without “sports knowledge” to take charge.  You know what happened here.  David Gold said “So, who’s going to be making the Soccer decisions around here?” and when he was told it was some random dude who just runs some company, he split.

Ever seen the movie “The Usual Suspects “?  You know the bad guy Kaiser Soze?  You know how he got the way he was?  Some thugs broke into his house and defiled his family and instead of living with the pain of that he killed his family and then killed the thugs.  I don’t think David Gold is going to do any of that, but instead of seeing his beloved club be run into the ground (which he MUST think is going to happen) he said “No thanks.”

I can guarantee you this:  If Birmingham City even so much as sniffs success in the Premiership any time in the next 5-10 years I will be shocked.  I have my reasons…

Look at the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones.  He brought in Jimmy Johnson and Jimmy Johnson’s football smarts won the Cowboys 3 Super Bowls in the 90′s.  When Jimmy Johnson was gone Jerry Jones made himself the team’s General Manager.  The only qualifications for that job Jerry has are:  1)  He’s the owner of the team.  2)  He went to Arkansas back in the glory days when the Arkansas/Texas game at the Cotton Bowl decided the National Champion on a regular basis.  That’s it.  You know when the Cowboys last won a playoff game?  1996.

I rest my case.
