Landon Donovan should stay in the land of fish and chips and bangers and mash for good.
I know it sounds a bit hypocritical for a Yank to wish that the MLS’ best domestic would leave the league to go across the pond, but with Donovan’s recent transfer to Everton he has finally proven to the world that he is top division stuff. You can say it is a mere coincidence that right when Donovan moved to Everton their season took a positive move up the table, but the LA Galaxy star has been a valuable player that is used frequently in the lineup.
And right now Everton is the hottest club in the Premier League. In the last three weeks they have beaten the two best squads in the league (Chelsea and Man U) and since Donovan has joined the squad in the seven matches they have played they have only lost a single match and that was to Liverpool. Donovan joined the club right at the worst time in the schedule, but with a win over Man City, Sunderland, and Wigan and a draw against Arsenal; Everton has captured 16 points in Donovan’s 7 matches.
The club has naturally jumped up the board since the acquisition as well. At the time Donovan was transferred Everton was within the relegation bubble (a team in the teens in other words), now the club has moved all the way up to a respectable eighth place. Donovan is giving us Yanks hope for more regular American players down the road. Clint Dempsey of Fulham and Tim Howard of Everton obviously haven’t hurt that prospect either, but the Premier League could have a potential star player on their hands down the road in Donovan.
We will just have to wait and see if he is ready for the challenge.
