Editor’s Note: Defoe did play in his match this weekend after all
Jermaine Defoe is the most underrated footballer in all of the Premier League. The Tottenham Hotspurs star player has quietly scored five goals this year in seven matches and has quite simply been a tremendous offensive force for the Spurs. At the pace Defoe is scoring he could easily end up with 25 goals at season’s end.
That is if the great Englishman didn’t get hurt.
But last weekend Defoe would have n0 such luck against new boys Burnley. During the Spurs 5-0 stomping of the new top tier squad they did suffer one casualty and unfortunately that loss was their best player. Defoe suffered a broken hand and a few dislocated fingers in the match and the injury is serious enough that the winger/striker will likely miss this weekend plus the England international matches that are due up in the middle of next week.
I know what you’re probably thinking? Football is a game played with your feet so why worry about fingers in the first place. Well the injury is serious enough that Defoe had to spend some time in the hospital and it is being reported that the injury is an extremely painful one as well.
Here is what Spurs manager Harry Redknapp had to say regarding the injury:
He is struggling. Jermain dislocated two fingers against Burnley last Saturday and they couldn’t get them back in. But he has also fractured his hand. He spent all Saturday night in hospital and is struggling. Hopefully, he’ll be OK for England but we’ll have to wait and see.
Peter Crouch is expected to fill the space in the Spurs lineup this weekend and perhaps Crouch will also fill the space on England’s international squad as well.
