I’ve been surprised at how many reports are circulating claiming that David Beckham is done with professional football. In the days of sports media that begs NFL star Brett Favre to return for one more year every single year, it seems a bit hypocritical that so many journalists are already writing off the rest of David Beckham’s potential career.
Although the man has missed his last chance at playing in the World Cup this summer with that terrible Achilles injury and is set to begin rehabbing the injury in about three months (and then he will likely need at least another few months for top notch fitness), many critics are already claiming that Sir Goldenballs is done.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here people!
Beckham might be done this season and he might have missed his last shot at playing in a fourth World Cup, but by no stretch of the imagination does these two things instantly mean that he is done for good. I will admit that the guy has become a real hobbler out there (did you see the MLS final or even the last World Cup four years ago?) and even if he was on the 23 man roster for England this summer he would be likely used mostly off of the bench in the twilight minutes of the match. But don’t forget that the guy is still under contract with the Galaxy. And for half of the world too.
Yes I know seeing Sir Goldenballs relegated to an inferior league’s action seems like a dreadful way for the English legend to end his career, but if the league can survive its current financial problems then Mr. Beckham will likely continue to play for the club. First off, Beckham isn’t really the type of guy that would easily walk away from the pitch. Secondly, the guy would also be waving bye-bye to a ton of potential money to be made. Third, the guy is still in great shape and has taken good care of himself over the years. And finally, his recent move to center midfield from the wing will likely only save his legs from being overworked that much more.
I will admit that despite all of these things the days of seeing Beckham in the England national team uniform are likely done. Ashley Young, Aaron Lennon, and Theo Walcott are all fine replacements for the team leader on the squad. But as far as the guy’s football career goes…
I think he will return one day to the MLS.
The only question left is will anybody care to watch it?
