Portsmouth Transfer Embargo Lifted

by David on January 26, 2010

The good news for Avram Grant and Pompey fans, is that the Premier League has lifted the clubs transfer embargo. The bad news is that they can only sign players on loan or who are available on a free transfer

Portsmouth has been unable to register new players since October, when the Premier League imposed the restriction due to the club’s unpaid debts on previous transfers. The ban on registering players has been reportedely linked to payments owed to Udinese over the signing of Sulley Muntari, who has since returned to Serie A with Inter Milan.

With an agreement between Portsmouth band Udinese now in place the ban has been lifted.

Man United Buy Smalling From Fulham

by David on January 26, 2010

Manchester United have agreed terms with Fulham to sign England Under-21 central defender Chris Smalling, with the 20-year-old set to join Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad during the summer.

“Chris has agreed personal terms with the club and will join for the beginning of the 2010/2011 campaign,” United said in a statement. “He will remain at Fulham until the end of the current season.”

It is amazing that Smallng was playing non-league football for Maidstone just over 18 months ago and this summer he will be heading to Old Trafford.

While Smalling is an England Under-21 central defender, the question arises where will he play at United with Ferdinand, Vidic and Evans all established players ahead of him in the team.

I Love It When People Tell You How Much They Hate Each Other

Roy Keane totally put his old teammate on blast today when he started running his mouth about Mark Hughes being fired from Manchester City.  Like the title says…I just love it when people say how much they hate someone else.  For example…I HATE Shaq…HATE him (and I’m a Lakers fan) but I hate his guts.  I really do.

So, when Roy Keane says of Hughes and City:

“I think when you’re involved with a club like United, as Sparky was over his career, you shouldn’t go to a club like City. I think you should try and get employment somewhere else. I think Sparky is probably better off.”

Man City have spent £216million in 12 months

by David Wilson on August 25, 2009

With the signing of Joleon Lescott yesterday for for £24million, Manchester City have now spent £216.5m in transfer fees in the last 12 months.

Mark Hughes’ incredible spree on 13 new players, plus Stuart Taylor and Sylvinho on frees, has rocked English soccer and newspaper reports say that City’s Arab owners have pledged even more if boss Sparky can identify anyone else he wants before the deadline, plus another £100m in January!

Spending since July ’08

Here are the Premier League’s seven biggest spending clubs over the past 12 months.

Man City Sign Lescott

by David Wilson on August 24, 2009

Manchester City have agreed a fee believed to be in the region of €28m for Everton central defender Joleon Lescott, subject to the 27-year-old passing medical tests and agreeing personal terms.

Mark Hughes’ side have made a series of offers for the seven-times capped England international, who was dropped from the Toffees’ squad for last week’s UEFA Europa League play-off opener against SK Sigma Olomouc with manager David Moyes concerned about his attitude after the club refused his transfer request. He was also absent for Sunday’s 1-0 league defeat against Burnley FC, with Moyes admitting: “I think there’s a deal there and it’s going to go through if things can be agreed.”

Xabi Alonso hands in Liverpool transfer request

by David Wilson on July 30, 2009

Xabi Alonso has reportedly tried to force through his move from Liverpool to Real Madrid by handing in a written transfer request.

The midfielder is concerned that Madrid did not meet Liverpool’s 48-hour deadline to meet their asking price and made his desire to leave formal, according to both Spanish newspaper Marca and the Liverpool Echo.

The DailMail reports that Liverpool and Real Madrid are close to reaching an agreement after being £20million apart in their valuations earlier this summer. They were thought to be within £5m of agreement by Wednesday night, with a fee just under £30m expected to be accepted by Liverpool by the weekend.

Crouch v Bent

by David Wilson on July 26, 2009

peter-crouchI have to admit that some of the transfer fees this summer have made me shake my head more than once. But the valuations of Peter Crouch and Darren Bent are totally baffling.

Spurs are interested in buying Peter Crouch from Portsmouth for a reported £9million. I know that there is a fire-sale going on at Pompey this summer but £9million for a former England center-forward who scored 16 goals in 34 games for his country and a Premiership strike rate of one goal in under every 3 games seems very cheap.

Pompey bought Crouch from Liverpool for £11million last summer, so they are losing money on the deal.
