Chelsea and Liverpool forced to name small squads

by David Wilson on September 1, 2010

For the first time Premier League teams had to name a 25-man squad for the first half of the EPL season and there was a couple of surprises.

All 20 clubs had to submit a squad of up to 25 players containing no more than 17 players who do not qualify as homegrown. Homegrown players are classed as players who “irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday”.

Transfer deadline day part two

by Damian Cooper on August 31, 2010

hleb So as the dust settles until January, three of the seven transfers that were being rumoured as the day began actually happened. Gyan, Di Santos and Hleb all making the moves they were expected to make as the day started. Once again though as predicted, the 24 hour rolling news channels were making up their own stories. If Scott Parker had left West Ham in this transfer window then the Chariman would have had to leave West Ham as well. He came out weeks ago with a statement that would have made his position unteneable if Parker had gone. Yet the television got a lot of coverage out of the nothing story that he was on his way to Spurs.

Transfer deadline day part one

by Damian Cooper on August 31, 2010

Robbie Keane Today is transfer deadline day in the EPL meaning that Premier League clubs have until 6pm London time to sign players before the window closes. The day is always rife with Speculation and the advent of 24 hour rolling sports news has fuelled that speculation further in recent years.

Avram Grant is on his phone down at the Boleyn Ground with rumours abound of Jamie O’Hara and Robbie Keane coming in. Scott Parker is sought after once again, and Hammers fans will be hoping that the Board do what they say and keep hold of Parker. Chairman David Sullivan issued a hands off warning a few weeks ago and said Parker was categorically going nowhere. That hasn’t stopped the rumours though.

Spurs Lose In Champions League Qualifier

by David Wilson on August 17, 2010

SPURS WONTottenham came from three goals down in a 3-2 Champions League play-off first-round defeat to Young Boys of Bern at the Stade de Suisse Wankdorf.

Helped by some dreadful Spurs defending Senad Lulic, Henri Bienvenu and Xavier Hochstrasser gave Young Boys a shock 3-0 lead. But Spurs fought back to earn two vital away goals – a header from Sebastien Bassong and a great shot from Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Spurs have to count themselves incredibly lucky to still be in this tie. They were terrible defensively all game, not just in the first 30 minutes when Young Boys ripped them to shreds.

Night begins to fall over Cardiff City Stadium Striker Craig Bellamy has made a surprise move to Cardiff City today, a side that play their football in the Football League Championship division. Welsh born Bellamy will be hoping to get his new side up in to the Premier League next season. The Bluebirds missed out on promotion last term with defeat against Blackpool in the playoff final.

Spurs seeded in Champions League Draw

by David Wilson on August 5, 2010

Tottenham have been given good news in that they will be one of the seeded teams for Friday’s Champions League play-off draw.

Spurs have five possible unseeded opponents in the draw: Sampdoria, Dynamo Kiev, Auxerre, Braga or Swiss side Young Boys.

Sampdoria, who finished fourth in Italy’s Serie A last season, and Ukrainian league runners-up Dynamo Kiev would appear to be the most challenging of Tottenham’s possible opponents.

Sampdoria have a new coach in Domenico Di Carlo and players of renown such as former Real Madrid striker Antonio Cassano. Former Spurs defender Reto Ziegler is also a first-team regular.

Welcome to the pleasuredome

by Damian Cooper on August 4, 2010

Gomes.. heir to Dida's throne? It’s time to look at how the Lilleywhites will do in the top flight of English football from Autum 2010 to Spring 2011. It isn’t just the league that Harry Redknapp will have on his mind this season though, as his charges have qualified for the European Champions League. They’re not there yet however, as finishing fourth doesn’t guarantee you the cash. It just gives you a shot of potentially making the big time for the following season. Spurs begin their campaign in Europe with a tie in the play-off round, so they are one two-legged tie away from the first group stages proper. That time is fast approaching as teams play tonight in second legs of third qualifying round ties to make it to that last chance saloon. When concentrating on Tottenham’s league form though, Europe cannot be separated out, as it often serves as a hindrance to league form.

What Now For England?

by John Brandon on June 29, 2010

After a desperately disappointing World Cup exit at the weekend, the question is where do England go now?
The whole tournament showed England to be an over hyped mediocre side set up in a way by Capello that below average sides were able to simply raise their game and get a result against them.
People have actually forgotten that before this tournament England actually failed to qualify for Euro 2008, with exactly the same squad as the current campaign. So it’s the same squad, just four years older, or as Capello whinged in his press conference, ‘four years more tired’.

Spurs Clinches Champions League Spot

by David on May 5, 2010

Tottenham qualified for the Champions League for the first time, beating Manchester City 1-0 Wednesday night.

Peter Crouch was the goal scoring hero for Spurs as he reacted first to a save from Man City goalkeeper Marton Fulop to nod the ball into the net.

“For a club like us to break into the top four is a fantastic achievement— it’s probably one of the best nights I’ve been part of,” Crouch said. “I was in the right place at the right time. The keeper made a good save and I was in the right place just to nod it home.”

Tevez Costs Too Much?

by Patton Hunnicutt on May 4, 2010

Carlos Tévez

This is an interesting point of view on an EPL player from an EPL coach that isn’t even his own discussing another coach who didn’t sign said player.  I’m really starting to love the honesty in the ranks of Europeans Soccer coaches and everytime I see more of it I just get all jittery and excited at what they’re going to say!

On one hand it’s funny to hear coaches talking about a very good and useful Striker who has brought just about everything you could ask for to Manchester City.  Though City hasn’t had the best season Tevez has played very well, so that makes these comments even more hilarious.
