Manchester United

Wayne RooneyManchester United hammered AC Milan 4-0 to move into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Leading 3-2 after the first leg, Man Utd tightened their grip on the tie when Wayne Rooney scored again. With the goal Rooney became on the second player in history to score in both legs of a European tie against Milan.

Any hopes that Milan had of getting back in the game were killed a minute into the second half when Rooney ran onto a brilliant ball from Nani to score his 30th goal of the season and knock Milan out of the Champions League.

Yes, we’re doing this again, but I finally have it figured out…

Ok, so this thing with Fabio Capello is getting out of hand.  Now Alex Ferguson is in the middle of this mayhem because Rooney hurt himself again in the English friendly with Egypt.

Now, here’s where I think we have some seriously backwards thinking.  Fergie says that Fabio Capello isn’t to blame for Rooney’s injury because Rooney should have “taken care of it himself”.  Ok, so what was Rooney supposed to do?  Tell Capello–a maniac–that:

Despite the protests of Manchester United fans, the financial situation of the club is improving according to new figures showing an increase in revenue and profits.

The figures for the six months up to December show turnover up 19% to £144.7million from £121.7million for the equivalent period in 2008, largely due to increases in match day revenues, TV money – particularly from the Champions League – and commercial revenue.

Media revenues have increased 33% from £40.3million to £53.4million and commercial revenues up 16% from £33.5million to £38.7million.

Arsenal have overtaken Chelsea in the ‘rich list’ of European clubs. Moving up to fifth place on the list.

The Deloitte Football Money League has Real Madrid and Barcelona in the top two spots but mainly due to the continuing decline of the pound against the euro. The Deloitte list is based on clubs’ revenue excluding transfer fees.

Arsenal moved ahead of Chelsea as the Gunners recorded a 7% rise in revenue to £224 million compared to Chelsea’s’ £20 6million – a 3% fall in revenue.

Can they repeat their 2009 glory?

The first trophy to be contested this season is the Carling Cup and it goes down today at Wembley.  This is what I LOVE about European sports.  There are so many ways to be successful during the season that it gets interesting for everybody.  Aston Villa and United will square off to take the Carling Cup and that means that Aston Villa can redeem part of their larger FA Cup season with a Carling Cup win.

Manchester United moved to within a point of Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 3-0 defeat of West Ham United tonight.

A week after heading two goals in the 3-2 UEFA Champions League first knockout round first-leg defeat of AC Milan, Wayne Rooney did it again. His first came on 38 minutes, turning in Antonio Valencia’s volley at the end of a fine team move. Ten minutes into the second half, Valencia again set up Rooney to double the lead and take his season’s goal tally to 27.

Wayne RooneyWhen the Champions League draw was made back in December, Milan were riding high on a long unbeaten run and Manchester United were struggling to get four fit defenders. At that time, this looked like a good draw for Milan and I thought they have a good chance to knock off Man Utd.

We times have changed. The Milan team is aging before our eyes, Manchester United have fit defenders and Wayne Rooney is playing like the best player in Europe. This tie looks very different now.

Manchester United have announced that Ryan Giggs will be out for up to four weeks after fracturing his right arm during Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

The injury means that Giggs will miss the first leg of United’s Champions League match at AC Milan on Tuesday, but could be back for the return leg at Old Trafford on March 10.

In addition to the Milan game, Giggs will miss the League Cup final against Villa on Feb. 28 and three Premier League games, against Everton, West Ham and Wolves.

Wayne RooneyYes, it’s true that Wayne Rooney scored a thousand goals against Pompey to bring ManU 1-up on the Premier League table over Chelsea, but we’re all forgetting that Chelsea plays on Sunday…against Arsenal.

Now, it could be very easy for us to say that ManU is on fire.  Carlo Ancelotti even said that he thinks Wayne Rooney is the best player in the world right now.  Ok.  However, Chelsea still fields John Terry and Didier Drogba.  They haven’t been overtaken in an overwhelming fashion, but United has made the race much tighter.

RooneyManchester United swept aside title rivals Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium to move within a point of leaders Chelsea, although Chelsea have a game in hand.

Arsenal, who started the match five points behind Chelsea ahead of their trip to Stamford Bridge next weekend, began well and Andrey Arshavin posed a threat.

But United, slowly started to gain the upper hand before Nani created the opener after 33 minutes. The winger skipped easily in between two defenders and chipped the ball back across goal where Manuel Almunia could only push it inside his far post.
