Landon Donovan should stay in the land of fish and chips and bangers and mash for good.
I know it sounds a bit hypocritical for a Yank to wish that the MLS’ best domestic would leave the league to go across the pond, but with Donovan’s recent transfer to Everton he has finally proven to the world that he is top division stuff. You can say it is a mere coincidence that right when Donovan moved to Everton their season took a positive move up the table, but the LA Galaxy star has been a valuable player that is used frequently in the lineup. Chelsea moved back on top of the Premier League with a convincing 3-0 win at home against Birmingham City. Birmingham arrived at Stamford Bridge on a club-record 15-match unbeaten run, but that unbeaten streak was in jeopardy within six minutes when City left Florent Malouda unmarked in the penalty box, as he headed in a cross from Joe Cole.
Chelsea spurned several good chances before Frank Lampard added a second before half-time. Lampard again finished of the scoring in the 90th minute as Chelsea look the most likely team to win the Premier League this season. Read more... (244 words, 3 images, estimated 59 secs reading time)
It appears that Everton is close to signing Landon Donovan to get him on a 3-month loan. As soon as I read this I had many questions. Many, many questions.
1. Is Landon Donovan really going to be able to help a club that is as pathetic as Everton right now?
No. Everton is showing us that their “way” isn’t working and now they want to bring in a guy who needed David Beckham so his team could LOSE the MLS Final to what amounted to an expansion team? I don’t get it. I know Landon is a good player and all that, but has anyone else noticed that USSoccer is thinking of adding Robbie Findley to their roster? (Do you think that’s because he made Donovan look like a kindergartener?) Read more... (361 words, 3 images, estimated 1:27 mins reading time)
Everton are expected to sign US international Landon Donovan on a three-month loan deal in January.
Donovan needs to play competitive football at the end of the Major League Soccer to maintain his fitness for the World Cup finals in South Africa in June and he spent last winter at Bayern Munich.
Newspaper reports say that negotiations are at an advanced stage with the 27-year-old, who is the USA’s all-time leading scorer.
LD’s move to Merseyside would help boost Everton’s injury-ravanged squad, and he will be able to play in the next stage of the Europa League. Read more... (125 words, 2 images, estimated 30 secs reading time)
Alright, over here in the States we don’t get as much Soccer coverage as we should. I admit that.
I get ESPN The Magazine and there was an interesting piece in there about the “Everton Way” and how it is used all over the place to train young players because… Everton has to be better at training. Why? Well, part of their recruiting area is inaccessible (apparently part of their recruiting area is in the Irish Sea.)
I thought “The Way” was all well and good (and very cool. The tenets of “The Way” make perfectly good sense), but people are asking if “The Way” will mean a resurgence in American Soccer. Read more... (460 words, 2 images, estimated 1:50 mins reading time)
Everton have received a formal bid of around £15m from Manchester City and have rejected the offer.
Everton chief executive Robert Elstone said:
“As a club, we have publicly stated – as recently as Wednesday night – that we do not intend selling any players. ”David Moyes’ primary focus is on building a squad so that we can continue to compete effectively in what is the most competitive league in world football.”
Lescott, who lives in the Manchester area, is believed to be interested in a move to a club with such vast wealth and ambitions. Read more... (200 words, 2 images, estimated 48 secs reading time)
Frank Lampard’s second-half winner gave Guus Hiddink the FA Cup in his final game as Chelsea manager after a 2-1 win over Everton at Wembley.
Everton had scored the fastest goal in the history of the cup final after just 25 seconds when Louis Saha’s left-footed strike flashed past Petr Cech. But Didier Drogba powered in a headed equaliser before the break, and Chelsea dominated the second period with Lampard’s 72nd-minute winner taking the trophy. Read more... Everton manager David Moyes and centre-back Phil Jagielka have been named Manager of the Month and Player of the Month for February, and received their awards at the club’s Finch Farm training complex earlier today.
Despite struggling with injuries, Moyes, who seems to have built a tremendous team spirit coupled with a strong work ethic at Goodison Park, steered the Toffees to home league wins over both Bolton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion, as well as a draw at Newcastle United. In a thrilling match, Aston Villa continued to push into the Big Four’s territory by besting Everton at Goodison Park. Villa took the Toffees down 3-2 on Ashley Young’s winner deep in extra time. Young, who many speculated might not even play in this match, broke clear before heroically putting the ball past American keeper Tim Howard.
Early on, it looked like it would be all Villa when Steve Sidwell scored in the game’s first minute. But, it didn’t take long for Everton to level the game on a Joleon Lescott goal. Young also scored the Villans second goal after some sloppy Everton defense, but Lescott evened things for Everton once again with an equalizer just into extra time. Young wasn’t done yet though, and his play earned Villa three points. Read more... (276 words, 3 images, estimated 1:06 mins reading time)
