Benitez Will Skip Out on Liverpool?

by Patton Hunnicutt on November 17, 2009

benitez_412_torres_090408I wake up this morning and read something pretty disturbing coming from Rafa Benitez.  Apparently, he says that if Fernando Torres is EVER moved out of Liverpool he’ll walk…right there…on the spot.

First, let’s deal with the 5th Grader’s attitude about this.  “So, what if Torres is 50 years old and you’ve won the FA Cup 5 times with him, but now he’s too old.  Would you quit when you had to sell him then?  Huh?”  {Personally, I think proclamations like this are stupid no matter who they come from and no matter how much I like them.  Example:  I like Kobe Bryant (NBAer, right) but if he said he was going to retire if Phil Jackson retired I’d be SO mad.  What a stupid thing to say, right?}

Anyways, so you’ve got Rafa going off about the “potential” for this player to be moved.  Did anyone come out and say they were shopping him?  Did he say “I want out of here”?  At any point has Liverpool indicated that they want to move this guy?  I don’t think so.

So, what is Rafa really saying?

What does he mean when he says “If this team sells Torres I’m SO outta here!”

What he really means is…”I’m not a very good coach.  I know I’m not a very good coach.  I don’t teach the game very well.  I don’t manage my players very well.  I’m not capable of out-scheming opposing coaches.  I’m not knowledgeable enough about the game on this side of the “line” to get things done without a superstar.  Basically, I’m mediocre at best.”

Why else would you shoot off at the mouth about something like this unless you knew you just weren’t a very good coach?  Think about it.  People say, all the time, “This is a business” in response to being sold or being let go or whatever.  Why can’t Rafa also see that it’s a business and things happen sometimes that are out of his control?  (shhhh….don’t tell anyone….it’s because he can’t coach very well.)

That’s the dirty little secret in Liverpool.  Now I know why he’s on the hot seat constantly.  He just isn’t very good.  Now, he’s telling us that he isn’t very good.  Imagine being one of his players right now.  I don’t think this inspires any confidence.

Maybe I should apply for the Managership in Liverpool.

Hmm, that’s a thought…
