And It Begins… England VS U.S.A.

by Brian Hall on December 13, 2009

Let’s be honest my friends from England.

This year seems to be making out to be a pretty good little football rivalry between the U.S. and England.

And don’t worry I will not be foolish….yet.  I realize that your brand of football is prime rib and our brand is Taco Bell meat.  I realize that your football traditions is Old Trafford; whereas ours is the back lot of a closed K-mart.  I realize that your players are multi-million dollar superstars; whereas ours take the bus to work.

I realize all of these things… and I don’t care.

I’m a Yank, and as they say, once a Yank always a Yank.  I’m also a fan of the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  So you can say that I take pleasure in rooting for the underdog.  And as I have made it clear earlier in this blog…. make no mistake.  The U.S. is the underdog in this one.

But you know who else was once an underdog.  Rocky Balboa (American).  Imagine what ol’ Rock was thinking when he stepped in the ring against (Russian) Ivan Drago.  He was thinking, “Holy s***!  This guy killed my best friend with his fists.”  But he won anyway.

And sure that movie was written, produced, and distributed by Americans, but it still has a valuable point.  That point is….

That’s Why They Play the Game

Right now Landon Donovan is running in a Russian snow storm, carrying giant  logs of wood for endurance, and eating snow as his only meal.   Well on second thought doing all of these things probably wouldn’t be good training and would likely give you hypothermia, but the point is every World Cup coaching staff and roster is working their tail off right now preparing every day for the same objective.

We are getting ready, England.

Will you be ready?
