2009 WPS Power Rankings (07/16)
Last Week’s Ranking in Parenthesis…
- Los Angeles Sol (1): The Sol DNP (“did not play”) so I WNMT (“will not move them”). That last one almost looks like WNT (“women’s national team”). They look better than 99% of national teams, and I think they are #1 for good.
- Boston Breakers (4): BB had two games last week, and they won them both in shutout fashion. Thus, they deserve their two spot rise up the rankings. The question before them now is “Can you sustain your success?”
- Saint Louis Athletica (2): SLA lost this week, so they fall one spot. They lost to the Freedom on the road though, and it was a typical SLA loss (0-1), so I am not too worried about them. They did beat LA last week.
- Sky Blue FC (3): Sky Blue got to stay home all week to host the Freedom and the Red Stars. They picked up four points too, so it’s a shame I am moving them down. But, they didn’t play anyone who is now above them.
- Washington Freedom (5): The Freedom got one gritty win @ home vs. SLA, and one shootout tie with Sky Blue on the road. While their D is very Jekyll & Hyde, their offense seems capable, so they are one to watch.
- Chicago Red Stars (6): CRS lost not once, but twice last week. Both came on the road, one to BB and another to NJ. For awhile, they would have preferred to be away from Toyota Park, but now they can’t wait to be home.
- FC Gold Pride (7): FCGP lost again. I feel sorry for this squad. They had the worst fan support last week (2,203) and they couldn’t even put up a goal to try to draw more folks out next time. I hope they turn it around.
