2009 WPS Power Rankings (07/08)
Last Week’s Ranking in Parenthesis…
- Los Angeles Sol (1): What can you say about the Sol and Marta. They are the best team and she is the best player. Her late goal gave the team three more points (in a road game no less) and they got another shutout.
- Saint Louis Athletica (3): SLA got it done on the road against Gold Pride, and in the process they easily surged into 2nd place in WPS. While they can’t beat the Sol yet, they are emerging as the one team who might.
- Boston Breakers (2): A rough road loss against the Jersey Girls again exposed BB’s mediocre offense. Even at .500 though, they are currently sitting @ third on the league table and in these PLTO Power Rankings.
- Sky Blue FC (5): A win @ home has Sky Blue rising out of early season obscurity and closer to the league’s elite. While I love their defensive tenacity, I am starting to doubt whether this team has the attack to compete.
- Washington Freedom (4): Two games (one home, one away) and two losses this week for the Freedom. You would have thought the week of July 4th would have been kinder to a sqaud with such a patriotic moniker.
- Chicago Red Stars (7): Wrigley has that darn Billy Goat Curse, and so far this year it looked like Toyota Park also had some kind of hex on it with both CRS and the Fire struggling at home. But, CRS finally got home win #2.
- FC Gold Pride (6): The Pride dropped another home game (now only 2-3-1 @ Buck Shaw), so they must also drop into the PLTO Rankings basement. With the worst goal differential in WPS (-7), they deserve it too.
