2009 PLTO FLC Awards: Best & Worst Offense & Defense

by Brian Hall on July 30, 2009

Apparently winning the league title, the PLTO awards for Best FLC Club, Most Valuable Player, Coach of the Year, and Best Team Player was not enough for the Wolverhampton Wanderers this season.  The club decided to go for it all this year and win every positive award the PLTO has to offer.  And the club was very close.

Best Offense

It’s no surprise that Wolves were winners of this FLC award as well. It has already been announced that the club had the second tier Golden Boot winner (Sylvan Ebanks-Blake), the leader in assists (Michael Kightly), and the most goals of any club in the entire league with 80.  Most impressive is probably how easily the top club dominated it’s competition.  The Wolves scored eight more goals then the second closest club and rightfully deserve the honor of best Football League Championship Offense.

Best Defense

They say defense wins championships and Birmingham was awfully close this year to proving the old saying right.  The club finished the year in second place and were awarded a spot in the Premier League next season.  Birmingham, who did not have a spectacular offense, lead the league in fewest goals conceded this season with 37.

Worst Offense

It would be a shootout this season (or lack of) to see who would wind up having the worst offense of any second tier club.  The winner was hard to determine and therefore will be announced as joint winners.  Queens Park Rangers and Doncaster Rovers are the dual winners.  Both clubs only scored 42 goals this season which is less then one goal per game.  The good news is both clubs easily avoided relegation due to outstanding defense.

Worst Defense

This is usually considered the worst statistic to be in first place.  Charlton Athletic did not disappoint either finishing the year in last place and allowing a whopping 74 goals into the net.  The club will be relegated to League One next season which should not be much of a surprise,  they only won eight matches all year.
