2009 EPL Season Review: West Ham

by The Yank on June 16, 2009

Team Overview: West Ham United F.C., founded in 1895, is still searching for their first title in the Prem. Sure, they have won the FA Cup three times, with their most recent victory coming during their historic 1980 campaign. But, success on the league tables has eluded them. In fact, the best they have ever fared is third place (1985/1986).

Top Performers: Carlton Cole had 10 goas and 3 assists for West Ham, so he was definitely their most valuable player on the attack. David Di Michele also had three assists, but he only notched 4 goals. If it wasn’t for GK Robert Green (1.18 GAA), West Ham would have been terrible. He definitely was this squad’s Most Valuable Player.

Highest Highs: West Ham had an excellent run during the holiday season, which began with a win over Portsmouth the day after Christmas. They then enjoyed an unbeated streak that lasted seven weeks, which means they were the last team to lose a game in 2009. The did finally lose to Man U in a 1-0 heartbreaker in early Feb.

Lowest Lows: West Ham stunk the entire month of October, losing all four of their matches and ending the month without a single point. One major factor in their dismal month was that they only scored one goal, yet conceded eight. During October, they showed that they could lose to good teams (Man U, Arsenal) and bad ones (Bolton).

Future Outlook: West Ham may suffer a decline in 2010, as team captain and midfielder Lucas Neill will likely be heading elsewhere. Also, Di Michele looks to be leaving the club, so the Hammers will need some attacking players to solidify the middle of the pitch and the attacking end. If they don’t sign anyone, they will be in serious trouble.
