2009 EPL Season Review: Tottenham

by The Yank

Team Overview: Tottenham had a very special year, but unfortunately it was 1961 and not 2009. Back in 1961, they became the first team of the 20th Century to acheive the double (league title/FA Cup double). Unfortunately, it would be the last time they would win the league title. They still have major trophies in 6 straight decades though.

Top Performers: Darren Bent led the offensive attack for the Spurs with 12 goals and 2 assists. Aaron Lennon also had a decent season with 5 goals and 4 assists. But, it was goalkeeper Gomes (1.18 GAA) who kept the Spurs competitive in 2009. His brilliant play would keep them in many games over the course of the season.

Highest Highs: The Spurs were completely dominant during March despite the fact they had to play some of the EPL’s best. They started the month with a tie vs. Man U, then they dominated Middlesbrough for their biggest win of the season (4-0). Next, they moved on to impressive wins over Aston Villa and the hated Chelski Blues.

Lowest Lows: Tottenham was one win away from qualifiing for the continental cup next year, and they unfortunately missed qualifying by only two points. They have to be kicking themselves for losing to Liverpool in the final game of the season, but they can take heart that they beat Liverpool the other two times they played in ‘09.

Future Outlook: Tottenham missed out on Gareth Barry, so now they need to go out and find another top-notch defender as soon as possible. Unfortunately, they lack the major funds many other teams are sporting, so they may look for under-the-radar guys. They will also need more help on the attack to be successful in 2010 in the Prem.
