Team Overview: The Portsmouth Football Club was founded in 1898, but they haven’t celebrated being on top of the Prem since 1950. Though they did win the FA Cup last year, they have had a very disappointing season. Sure, they avoided relegation, but they also failed to build on last year’s momentum and become a top 10 team.
Top Performers: Peter Crouch remained an enigma, seeming to be so certain to explode for so many strikes, yet settling for 11 goals and five assists. Defoe only came to the club in January, yet he managed to notch 7 goals and 3 assists. Finally, veteran (and legend) David James did so-so in the net for Portsmouth with 1.53 GAA.
Highest Highs: Despite their difficulties on the road, Portsouth looked good at home with wins (by more than one goal) over the Spurs, Man U, and the Toffees. Pompey also had a great November run when they picked up 8 points off of two wins and two draws, as well as an impressive 2-2 showing vs. AC Milan in the UEFA Cup,
Lowest Lows: Though decent at times, Pompey just was too inconsistent this season with devastating losses to some suspect teams. They lost at home to Newcastle (who were relegated) by a score of three to nil, and they dropped an ugly 4-1 game vs. West Ham. Those losses paled in comparison to the 6-0 beatdown they took from Man City.
Future Outlook: Who knows what the future brings for Portsmouth? They, like many teams, have billionaire Arab owners, and many expect them to name a new manager soon and bring in some lucrative talent to hoist the club back in the top 10. Next year, they will look very different and revamped, but they will also look better.
