2009 EPL Season Review: Newcastle

by The Yank

Team Overview: Newcastle United has had a long history of successful teams. But, next year they will play outside of the EPL for the first time since 1989. For such a beloved team, this fall from grace marks the end of a remarkable run that featured some historic moments. But, this year Newcastle just didn’t have the desire.

Top Perfomers: Michael Owen (of course) performed as well as he could for Newcastle, but his 8 goals were not enough. Rising star Obafemi Martins also could not spur Newcastle’s attack with 8 goals. Goalkeeper Steve Harper did as well as he could, but due to Newcastle’s poor defense, he conceded 1.38 goals per game.

Highest High: The Magpies struggled to piece together wins all season. When they lost goalkeeper Shay Given to injury, the team was doomed midway through the season. Steve Harper deserves credit though. Sure, he couldn’t keep Newcastle afloat, but he did keep them competitive in many games when they should have lost.

Lowest Low: Newcastle still could have avoided relegation with 2 games remaining, as they needed just one point to nip Hull City. But, they fell on their face and were unable to score a single goal in two straight defeats to Fulham and Villa. The also had a stretch of ten games without a win at one point this season.

Future Outlook: Unfortunately, Newcastle’s future looks very uncertain currently. Michael Owen will likely leave the team for a better opportunity (i.e., chance of winning/more money). Martins is also an outstanding forward, and the Magpies need to hope to keep him happy. I think Newcastle will be back in the Prem soon.
