Team Overview: Middlesbrough had remained in the EPL since the late 90′s, but unfortunately all good things must come to an end as the ‘Boro will be relegated from the top flight after this season. It was a disappointing year for Middlesbrough fans, as they struggled to be consistent all year and finished the season in 19th place.
Best Performers: Tuncay Samli had a decent year (7 goals and 4 assists), but it is a sad truth that he was the team’s leading scorer. Gary O’Neill also delived four goals, but this team didn’t have what it took to compete this year. It certainly didn’t help that Ross Turnbull conceded 1.54 goals per game.
Highest Highs: It’s hard to pick a highest high when you’ve had a year of dreadful moments. But, the team did win a big game against Villa 2-1. October and November were good to the ‘Boro as well, as they picked up 13 of their 32 points over that period. All in all though, it was not a stellar year for the respected club.
Lowest Lows: The entire season was pretty terrible for Middlesbrough. They scored significantly less goals than any other team in the EPL (28); thus, they did not even average one goal per game for the entire season. Also, they had four different months in which they could not collect more than 1 point and they once had a winless streak of 15 games, a league worst in ’09.
Future Outlook: One thing that will dramatically help Middlesbrough’s chances of scoring more goals next season is the fact they will be playing against significantly worse competition in a less intense league. However, they do need to develop scoring threats, and they need to be upgrading where needed to make their offense potent.
