Team Overview: Another year, another title for Manchester United. The Red Devils have now firmly established themselves as one of the world’s best pro teams. They’ve won 11 titles since the Prem was established in the early 1990s and they almost won both the FA Cup and the Champions League in 2009. They are the cream of the EPL crop.
Top Performers: Despite the fact he was hampered by injuries, Cristiano Ronaldo still finished second for the Golden Boot (18 goals) and he showed some generosity to his teammates (6 assists). Rooney also had a nice year with 12 goals and 7 assists. Man U’s MVP though was Edwin van der Saar, who gave up only 0.64 goals per game.
Highest Highs: What can one say? Man U not only won the Prem for the 3rd straight season, but they also won 16 of their 19 home matches and a league-record 28 matches overall in 2009. They also won 11 straight at one point, and they ceded the fewest goals in the league. No one beat them down the stretch, so they deserve their accolades.
Lowest Lows: Man U was expected to battle Barcelona for the title of world’s best team at the Champions League Final, but they ended up rolling over and being bested 2-0 by a Barcelona team that was flat out better (and had the bigger star, i.e. Messi). Sure, a lowest low for a dynasty like Man U still isn’t that low, but it still had to hurt.
Future Outlook: The Red Devils have already lost Ronaldo, their playmaker, so they will need to bring in someone to put the ball firmly in the back of the net. If Carlos Tevez leaves too, Rooney will be a lonely attacker and Ferguson may suffer migraines. All that being said, it would be hard to bet against them in 2010.
I hope you have enjoyed our review of the 2008/2009 EPL Season, and I also hope you will all keep coming back to PLTO for the best EPL news, commentary and analysis on the interwebs. Peace.
