2009 EPL Season Review: Man City

by The Yank

Team Overview: Man City has played the vast majority of their seasons in the top flight of English football. Their clubs of the 1960’s (which were managed by Joe Mercer) were the squad’s best in history. Unfortunately, Man City hasn’t had a ton of success since their 1968 title, but wealthy new owners have this team on the rise – and fast.

Top Performers: Robinho, the enigmatic Brazilian forward, had a whopping 14 goals and 5 assists in 2009. But, Man City’s most important player was Stephen Ireland, who had 9 goals and 9 assists. Finally, youngster Joe Hart was solid in goal, only ceding 1.35 goals per game. Man City expects to add some stars this offseason too.

Highest Highs: Man City was dominant at home this season, winning thirteen matches and only losing six. Those numbers were good enough to give them the 3rd best home record in the league. They also averaged 2 goals per game at home, and it’s where they demolished Portsmouth (6-0), Hull City (5-1) and the Gunners (3-0).

Lowest Lows: Man City couldn’t win on the road this year. Though 3rd @ home, they were 17th on the road, with twelve losses, five draws and only two wins. The Citizens also had a +22 goal differential at home, but a pitiful -14 at home. By the end of 2009, Manchester City had scored 58 goals, but a measly 18 of them came during away games.

Future Outlook: Man City’s future could be getting brighter, with the rich, Arab owners looking to add several stars like Gareth Barry, formerly of Aston Villa. Their deep pockets will allow them to snag some rising talent that in years past would have gone to Man U or Chelsea. If they can land Carlos Tevez, I think they will improve greatly.
