Team Overview: The Reds still have the largest trophy case of any English club, though Man U did tie their record number of league titles (18). But, in addition to their 18 league titles, Liverpool has 7 FA Cups and 5 European Cup titles. Despite their historic success, the Reds still haven’t won the league since it became the Prem.
Top Performers: The Reds were led by – as usual – Steven Gerrard, who should have won the 2009 Player of the Year Award. His 16 goals and 9 assists don’t even begin to reflect his amazing season. Young Fernando Torres also had a whopping 14 goals. Finally, Pepe Reina was very good in goal, ceding a mere 0.71 goals per game in 2009.
Highest Highs: Liverpool led the EPL in scoring with 77 goals, and they also played great defense, giving up only 27 goals (3rd best in the league). They were also at their best at the end of the season. They didn’t just win their five last games, they dominated (14-2 overall). Also, they were unbeatable at home in 2009. Literally, they never lost.
Lowest Lows: The Reds didn’t have many lows, losing only 2 games all year, but they still finished second to Man U. The Reds were close to having a great year, but they fell short at every turn. They lost the Prem by 4 points, were knocked out of the FA Cup by Everton, and lost in the Champions League Quarterfinal vs. rival Chelsea.
Future Outlook: Liverpool must find a way to separate themselves from Man U next year. They could bring in a top talent at forward to complement Torres, like perhaps Kleber or Ezequiel Lavezzi. More importantly, they will need to appease their top stars and convince them to stay, including star midfielder Xabi Alonso.
