Team Overview: The Blackburn Rovers are one of only three teams in the Prem to be members of the original EPL and the Football League back in 1888. Next season will mark the 15th anniversary of the Rover’s last Premier League title, and their 10th straight year in competition in the top flight. It has been a nice run for Rovers’ fans.
Top Performers: Benedict McCarthy led Blackburn with 10 goals and 3 assists this season, which wasn’t too shabby. Jason Roberts also contributed 7 goals and 2 assists. Paul Robinson was decent in the net, though he did cede a mediocre 1.60 GAA (his defense wasn’t much help). All in all, the Rovers were scrappy, but not dominant.
Highest Highs: Blackburn had a great FA Cup run, and they showed they could compete with the EPL’s best with wins over Everton and Sunderland. They also fought valiantly in a loss against Man U (one of the best games of the season) that ended 5-3. Their home record also was strong, as they finished with six wins, six losses, and six ties.
Lowest Lows: Blackburn had a disappointing season, falling 8 spots on the table and out of the top 10. Their most glaring weakness was their defense, which allowed a whopping sixty goals. Their GAA average was the 3rd worst in the league, and though they played with desire, they didn’t have the talent to compete with the best.
Future Outlook: Blackburn needs to get stronger on both sides of the ball. Not only were they one of the weakest teams on defense, but they also only had one goal-scorer reach 10 goals on the year. Pedersen helped the team with 7 assists, but they will need more impetus on attack to escape relegation next season.
